Mayor Thomas O’Grady grew up in Cleveland
and moved to North Olmsted in 1970. He graduated
from Saint Ignatius High School and earned
a Bachelor’s degree from John Carroll University.
He went on to earn a Master’s from Harvard
University’s Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
in the field of Regional Studies – East Asia.
While at Harvard, he also studied at the John F.
Kennedy School of Government and was a researcher
at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.
He earned his second Master’s in education from
John Carroll. He and his wife Josephine
are the parents of three adult children.
Mayor O’Grady served his country in Europe, Asia,
and throughout the United States as a career US
Army Officer until his retirement in 1993.
Following his work in international marketing, be became
a teacher of history and government in the North
Olmsted City School system. Mayor
O’Grady is in his fourth term in public office,
having been elected to two terms as Councilman-at-Large
and one term as President of Council prior
to his election as Mayor in 2005. He
is a 1997 graduate of CSU’s Levin College
Public Officials Leadership Academy, and was recently
recognized as a Distinguished Alumni when he was chosen
as the Outstanding Elected Official for 2007.
Mayor Thomas O’Grady has a strong history of
community service that includes membership in the North
Olmsted Kiwanis, Knights of Columbus, American Legion
Post 451, Disabled American Veterans Post 108, Special
Forces Association, and the 82nd Airborne Division
Association, to name a few. He is a Trustee
of the North Olmsted Education Foundation,
and is a volunteer at the Westside Catholic Center
in Cleveland. Mayor O’Grady is a Trustee
of the North Olmsted Council on Paratransit,
is on the Board of Directors for the Cuyahoga County
Senior Transportation Connection, is on the Fairview
Hospital Community Advisory Board, is on the Board
of Directors of the Northeast Ohio Public Energy
Council, and is a member of the Great Lakes
Energy Task Force that is working to bring wind
and other green energy, along with associated jobs,
to Northeast Ohio.
Mayor O’Grady was elected by his peers to the
Board of Trustees of the Ohio Municipal League,
and was elected to the Executive Board of the Cuyahoga
County Mayors & Managers Association.
He is a member of the Mayors Education Roundtable
that is seeking to find a solution to the issue of school
funding in the State of Ohio. He is a member of
the international organization Mayors for Peace,
and is a member of the International Affairs Standing
Committee of the United States Conference of Mayors.
Mayor O’Grady is committed to government becoming
more efficient and has been outspoken proponent of regional
cooperation. He has been tireless in his efforts
to serve the residents of North Olmsted, and will continue
to work to improve the conditions for all in Northeast
Ohio.
