My Friends,
The strength of our Great Democracy is that the power of government rests with the people. The people have spoken in this past election and I respect their decision.
I remain very proud of the accomplishments of the O’Grady Administration. Major street projects have been completed ahead of schedule and under budget, with two others to be completed this year. Our professional street rating program now ensures that the neediest neighborhood streets are repaired first, and we have accelerated those repairs more than at any time in our past.
We have intelligently reorganized our City government to reduce the cost to our taxpayers. We are now a smaller, much more efficient government than at any time in our modern history. We have greatly expanded ADA access to City buildings and are now building our second ADA playground, while our business development efforts continue to bring new, high-paying jobs to our City.
I know that times are very challenging right now. In a strong economy incumbent office-holders are safe, and in a weak economy incumbents are at risk. Our economy is now at its weakest point since the Great Depression. But my observation has been that this is when the American people are at their best.
I thank all those who have volunteered their time and talents to make our community a better place. People are helping their neighbors and donating more to our City Food Cupboard. Our many Churches are coordinating their efforts with our City so that we can better serve our people. But this too shall pass.
For my part, I will continue the good works that we have begun in this Administration through the rest of this term, and will work closely with my successor to ensure a smooth transition. I thank all of our citizens for the honor of allowing me to serve as your mayor, and I wish you well.
